after Christmas activities

well Christmas is now behind us

everybody had a good time with plenty to eat

Daniel and I went down to Iowa City to try our luck at deer hunting we saw three coyotes the first night, a coyote and a flock of turkeys the second day and no deer

We helped celebrate Marie's birthday while we were down there, that was a lot of fun.

my procedure went well, I received a clean bill of health.  I am good for another 5 years.

The procedure itself was a peace of cake, they told me to roll over on my left side and the next thing I remember was waking up in the recovery room.  The prep the day before was not a big deal just an annoyance.  I want to thank dad for the Angel Soft, that was thoughtful!

It is amazing when you cannot eat anything, you have a terrible urge to eat everything!

Sarah and Dan were up here for a few days, it was good to see them.  Dan survived eating a super hot sandwich in Des Moines at Cactus Bob's BBQ Joint.  the challenge is to eat their hottest sandwich with their hottest hot sauce in 10 minutes without water and you have to keep it down and you get your picture on the wall and a T-shirt.  I have been there, there are not too many pictures on the wall, now there is one more.  Congratulations to Dan.

it is melting up here, we are supposed to get freezing rain up here.  what a mess, we get 12 inches of snow and within a week it is melting and now we have a slushy mess up here.

I am taking Matthew back to college tomorrow.

I am eating Oyster Stew everyday now,  I really need to figure out portions and quantities a little better

Chrismas is coming

Well we are at the shortest day of the year and now the days should be getting longer!

after Christmas I am scheduled to go in for a procedure

All I will say is the procedure will be on December 29, 2010 and the day before on December 28, 2010 I need to prep for the procedure

the preparation requires me to drink a liquid which after drinking the liquid, I need to make darn sure I am very close to the bathroom.

we received another 5 inches of snow on Monday, I would say we will be having a white Christmas this year!

Winter Blast!

We survived our first Winter Blast for the year

we got about 6 to 8 inches of snow, but the wind was the factor

we had rain Friday night and into Saturday morning, and then when the wind switched it changed to snow and the wind kept blowing harder and the snow kept coming down faster

It basically shut down all the roads in Northern Iowa

and now it is cold the sun is shining, but the temperature is -2 below

I brought Keeley inside today just to give her a chance to warm up

everybody is looking forward to Christmas in a couple weeks

Mary and Matthew will be coming home this week,  I will be going down on Tuesday to bring a load of Mary's items home.

I am enjoying some free time particularly in the evening, it is kind of nice to not have to worry about a paper to write or a project to complete.

I am contemplating on which soup to make for Christmas eve.   I am thinking either Broccoli and Cheese soup or chicken and noodle soup.

December Activities!

Well as I said in my last post way back in September, that time is just speeding by.

December is here already, and we can probably say good-bye to December, and look forward to the new year.

Daniel got confirmed last month and we had family up for that

we had everybody home for thanksgiving, that was enjoyable,  Sarah brought home Dan Waterbery to visit, that was nice

Matthew brought home his XBOX with his Kinect that was fun to watch everybody do that

We do have our Christmas stuff out and slowly putting it up, it is hard to believe we are in the second week of advent already

on December 4th I finished my last class for my MPA so I am all done with my master's program

we only got a dusting of snow last Friday

Philomena won here postal shoot in archery

and Philomena was selected to go to the IBA band,  it is like the All State Honor Band for Junior High,  she will play down in Des Moines in May, 2011

New Post...Finally! AGAIN!

Unbelievable,.....September is almost over!

Caroline survived her birthday, this will be her last year she will be in the forties.  Next year she gets to join the nifty fifty club like the rest of the older crew.

Daniel got his driver's license so he gets to drive to work and stuff.

Philomena had a 4-H skit at the Clay County fair last week.  Stephen got sick so I stayed home with him while Caroline, Daniel and Philomena went to the Clay County Fair in Spencer.  The skit went well.

My second to the last master's class started this month.  I have to give two presentations next month for the class.

Our south gutter on our house is clogged.  I have a friend who will make the climb to clean that out.

The ants are just plain terrible this month. The whole year has been a big ant problem.

We celebrated our 25 wedding anniversary this month.  I was out of town on our anniversary date.

Fifty is Nifty

Well I turned the big 50 this month, I have now joined Doug, Nancy, Janice and Doug into this age block. Caroline has one more year to go before crossing this threshold

It is like crossing the event horizon on SG1 you do not know what is actually on the other side.

The State Fair was hot,  Philomena did good on her presentation at the 4-H building.  I had my regular pork chop on a stick which was very good.  It is made by the Pork Producers, I do not know how they do it but that is the most moist best tasting pork chop I have ever eaten. It is a genuine pork chop and the stick is the bone part of the chop

Well August is now behind us and we can look back and comment on just where did the summer go?

I took Philomena and Stephen down to Iowa City this weekend to visit Janice and my nieces and nephews (except for Lucas who was back at home) who were in town to move in Nathaniel.  I was able to visit with them, as well as everybody else down there.

also I was able to see my youngest niece while I was there.

Everybody seemed to have a lot of fun together at supper time last night.  It was fun to see everybody.

I do not know the whole story, but Tom seems to be having some difficulty with coaching 5th and 6th graders football.  Hmmmmmmm, sounds like he is having fun, but I think I will buy more stock in aspirin and ibuprofen companies.

Also we took Keeley down for a check-up also.  She made it down and back without any problems.  No throw-ups in the car!!!

It was good to see everybody for the brief time we were down there.

Sarah is teaching

Mary and Matthew are back at school, and we got Mary and all of her stuff moved back to her dorm room.  I have no idea where all of that stuff will go into her room, or if it will even fit, but all that matters is that stuff is out of my hair for a while!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the way things are going Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner and before you know it I will have another birthday.

New Post...Finally!

Well it has been almost 6 weeks since the last post

I cannot believe how the time has gone by this summer, a lot of activities and crazy schedules

Right after the 4th of July Daniel and I went out with a total of 10 adults and 20 scouts to Colorado for summer camp.  Out of that group of 30,  3 adults (which included me) and 7 of the older scouts went on a high adventure and backpacked, hiked, camped for five days in the Rawah Wilderness Area next to the Roosevelt National forest just north of Estes park about an hour and Northwest of For Collins.  We took everything we needed (food, cooking, tents, etc.) to survive for 5 days of hiking.

The kids did well at the County Fair this year and Philomena will get to present her project at the State Fair this year. She gets to present on August 19 2010, so we will be at the State Fair on August 19, 2010

Sarah did an excellent performance in her community play in Cedar Falls it was Joseph and the technicolor dream coat.  The signing camels were funny

It has been very hot lately, but finally we did have a small break in the heat and humidity

School is just around the corner hard to believe August is finally here.

We are filling up on Harrington's sweet corn, they are out of Nashua IA

Some girl hit our car when Caroline went down to see Sarah's Play, it damaged the back bumper, she was pulling out of a parking spot and clipped our back bumper with her front bumper. It was our trailblazer

the Trailblazer will go in to get fixed in about a week

that is about it, so hopefully we will get into a pattern and post more regularly now

It has been quite a while since our last post

Mary just left to go back to camp

Daniel, Matthew and I just got back from a fun canoe trip on the St. Criox river with the scouts, the tornadoes in the area were 15 miles south of where we were camping that night while on the St. Croix.  Our tents stayed dry, and on the ground.

I finished my Drake summer class last week

Matthew had his Eagle Scout Ceremony with two other Eagle Scouts last week, that went very well.  Grandma and Grandpa Schnoebelen came up for that

Congratulations to Nathaniel for graduating from College, we are looking forward to him coming to Iowa to do his grad program

Congratulations to Katie for graduating from High school.  Sorry we could not make it down for the celebration

Happy Father's day to all the Fathers out there.

Matthew is going back to work at BV on Tuesday.  Still no hair cut.....how long will it grow??????

Awards and Accolades

Philomena did a fantastic job on her 4-H project presentations today over at NIACC

She is going to the State Fair with one of her project presentation

and for her group skit that she was in she is going to the Clay County Fair with that one

she made a cake that looked like a tank and she received a blue ribbon for that project

As of last Friday I did get promoted to district supervisor for the North-Central district

I will be supervising 14 officer over a 28 county area

Still no word regarding Sarah's interview she had at Notre Dame in Burlington.

Hopefully she will get the interview for Regina soon.

Thank you Val and Melissa's mom for putting a good word in for Sarah to the Regina principal.

Matthew's Eagle Scout Ceremony will be June 13, 2010 we are very proud of him for achieving that goal.
Invitations will be sent out shortly...I hope!

I biked around the lake today and had an average speed of 14.9 mph  that is an all time record for me.

The fitness center must be working!

married 54 years is a major accomplishment and for some reason the anniversary date was not written down on our calendar, so I missed calling them to wish them a happy anniversary by one day. I felt bad about that so I decided to to something special for them.

Howdy from one of the folks!

Still no news regarding my interview, the word is they will make an announcement after April 30, 2010

Sarah has another job interview down in Burlington, Iowa on Wednesday at the Notre Dame Catholic School for the 5 - 12 grade band teacher position.  I hope everybody will keep her in yours prayers for that position.

We went to Sarah's community play last night.  It went really well and Sarah did an excellent job, along with the other members of the cast.

After the play was over we were standing around talking to Sarah and another member of the cast came up to Sarah all excited and said "Oh!  is this part of your family?  I want to meet your folks!" 

So I thought, that is a shame that my folks and Caroline's folks are not here to meet her.  Then the light bulb turned on and I realized "Wait a minute"  that "Folks" term referred to Caroline and I!!!!!!

We have just moved up to a different level of terminology!  We have now been classified as "FOLKS!" We are no longer "The parents of .........."  or "these are my parents"  but now we are "Folks!!!!!"  I wonder what new duties and responsibilities are required now that we are "Folks"

It was chilly and rainy this weekend.

I harvested my first batch of Asparagus yesterday.  I have not cooked it up yet.

Robin Hood Schnoebelen!

Philomena went to her first Archery tournament today, she was entered in the Junior division.

She smoked the competition! and won first place in the Junior Division!  She won her first medal!  She was not just a little happy, she was A LOT HAPPY!  And so was I.

The 4-H club has started an archery club, she joined it and doing quite well at practice.  It paid off at the tournament.

I think she is ready to shoot an apple off of her mom's head!

Philomena shot trap for the first time last Tuesday, she did  well busting 8 out of the 25 for the first time shooting!

Daniel received a 2 rating on his French Horn Duet at music contests last Saturday, Good job for Daniel!

I took Sarah up to her job interview last Tuesday at Lake Park, Iowa. She will know the outcome on Tuesday. It is a nice community, I hope she gets offered the job.

Still no word or decision regarding my interview last Friday.  It has been over a week now.

Happy shout-out birthday wishes to Anna, Marcy, and Michael!  Hmmm, someone young, someone older, and someone younger!  No Wait!......... that is a wedding thing!.....or I just made that up!

Interviews

I had my interview last Friday, and I believe it went well.

I spent the next day going over my answers and saying "Oh, I should have said it this way" or "it would have been better if I said it like this"

But it is over, and we should know the outcome in the next few days.

Sarah has an interview today up in northwest Iowa west of Spirit Lake so I offered to be her driver so the drive would not be so long and tiresome.

Things are warming up and turning green so that is nice

The kids have gotten down their bikes and are taking to the street to ride them

Philomena is going to shoot trap at the Ventura gun club tonight, and she has an archery tournament on Sunday.  She is doing very well in archery.  She cannot shoot an apple off mom's head yet, but pretty close.

Daniel had a camp out last weekend, they went up to a scout camp north of Stillwater, MN and they made 6 dozen cinnamon rolls for Sunday breakfast for the scouts who attended.

Daniel and I are going to try our luck at Turkey hunting this spring so we are going to go out during 4th season which is in May.  We will try our luck down at the 80'

The snow is going....going.....going....gone!

Well the snow is just about all gone, so I thought I would post a before and after picture of our Buick that was buried under the snow and now has re-emerged, it is almost a 6 week difference between the pictures.

I have not tried starting it just yet, we need to fill the front tire first.  As you can see by the comparison we had quite the accumulation of snowfall.

Now our Rhubarb is beginning to pop up and things are slowly getting warmer, there is still ice on the lake and people are still walking out on it to fish.

They finally opened the supervisor position for my area and I put in my application for that position.  No word yet on interviews

Mary was home on spring break last week and we celebrated her birthday.  We were glad to have her home for a week to just "hang-out"

Sarah has her play production with the Tripoli High school students on Friday night we will be attending.  We are looking forward to watching that.

Matthew will be hiking in Texas over his spring break next week, and that will be a lot of fun for him.  At least it will get him away from his XBOX for a week.

Everybody is doing well in school.

We went over to Garner for Parent teacher conference for Daniel's shop class,  the instructor showed us some of Daniel's projects.  Daniel is doing quite well, he made a nice crowbar, and wooden truck and his welding is very good. He has already made a boot scraper and a nice scoop.

Philomena is doing well in dance and her recital is coming up shortly.

Stephen is having fun with cub scouts and he is currently signed up for swim lessons

our sump pump is working very nicely keeping our basement dry.

Philomena's Birthday!

Happy Birthday to Philomena

We did the traditional family singing Happy Birthday to her this morning to wake her up.

She had a fun day, we celebrated her birthday the night before, with presents, cake and ice cream.  We surprised her, she thought we were going to celebrate it later, but we fooled her.

As you can see with 3 out of the 8 people not present our celebration participants are much smaller, and the cake seems to last a little bit longer now also.

I did win a cake at the boy scout roundtable meeting this week so we have two cakes to eat.


The view outside our windows is still white, eventually things will warm up.

One month down 11 more to go

It is hard to believe that we are closing the book on January 2010 already!

Happy birthday to all the January birth dates, I know Angelica will be celebrating her special day on Sunday, Happy Birthday Angelica!

January was just plain full of activities.

I graduated from my Certified Public Manager's course on January 15, 2010.  We gave our final presentations at a conference at Drake on that day.  Caroline came down the night before and a bunch of our classmates went out to dinner with spouses and had a good time.

Our group did a presentation on container gardens and providing accessibility to fresh produce, and providing a booklet for distribution at workforce development centers for people to pick up and learn about this growing trend.

Stephen spent a weekend at the Winnebago Scout camp where we went sledding, cross country skiing and doing crafts and sleeping overnight in a cabin

Philomena is doing well in her dance,  and I took her to see the Broadway show ANNIE right before Christmas. 

Daniel performed in the Corn Belt conference honor band last Thursday, he did well at that.

Caroline, Daniel and I joined a fitness center this month.  It is called AnyTime Fitness.  They just opened up in Clear Lake, but they have fitness centers all over.  They give you  a FOB to allow access into the facility and it is open 24 hours. So you can go in and exercise on your time and schedule.  They have real nice equipment and good security.  They have cameras all around with a well lighted parking lot, and they have security necklaces that you can wear when you leave at night so if something is not right you press the button and 911 is activated.  No one gets in without a FOB and no one can tailgate behind a person because of a counter and camera on the door.  It beeps when two people go through the door, so when the door is open and two people walk through the open door the counter catches that and the camera records it, flags it, and the owners checks all those occurrences. Your FOB has your info on it so it records who opened the door. Everybody has to use their FOB to get in.  So I go in, the door shuts and then Caroline goes in.  You can utilize any of the other AnyTime facilities with your FOB.  But the best thing is! that all the treadmills, ellipticals, bicycles, stair machines have individual flat screen TV's on them.  So when your exercising you can plug your head phones in to watch and listen to your favorite cable TV Show. Yes, they do have EWTN. Spending an hour on the Elliptical machine watching the "Bourne Ultimatum" made my 60 minute cardio exercise go by pretty fast. We are enjoying this activity and I was surprised that my blood pressure has dropped even lower in the short week we have started.  You can google AnyTime Fitness and find a location near you,  they are in Iowa City and Burlington.  I can say for Clear Lake there are people of all ages and levels of fitness utilizing this facility.  The owner of this place wants to have people feel comfortable exercising there and not feel intimidated exercising next to someone that may be more or less fit than you.   I would recommend to check this fitness center out, or at least some health program, or at least think about your health, or at least contemplate what you plan on doing with it.  All I know is that I was getting more sluggish as the years progressed.  Enough said on that issue.

This week we had to replace the starter motors in both vehicles the Ford and Trailblazer.  Actually we had to replace the starter in the Trailblazer twice in less than a 24 hour period.  The Ford was having difficulty starting like the battery was dead, but we put a brand new battery in it before Christmas.  They hooked the Ford up to a tester and replicated the problem and found a weak starter.

The Trailblazer was different, it would not start at all.  so it had to be towed, since we have an extended warranty on the Trailblazer it went to the Chevy garage, where it was diagnosed as a bad starter motor, and the extended warranty covered that replacement so it did not cost us a dime to get that one fixed.  So we picked up the Trailblazer Friday morning at 10:30 AM,  By 10:30 PM that night when Caroline climbed in to go home from Perkins the Trailblazer did not start.  So the Trailblazer spent the night at Perkins and Saturday morning it got towed back to the Chevy Dealership, where it was diagnosed as a second bad starter motor.  That did not cost us a dime either.  Hopefully this organ transplant will hold and not be rejected.

I started my next class for my masters program last Friday.  It is called research analysis. We get to learn and understand all these research surveys, etc.  like all these Gallup polls, etc.

Philomena is selling Girl Scout Cookies if any one is interested in some.

A New Year

It's a new year, and all I can say is BOY! ...it is cold outside, and it will be colder tonight! BRrrrr!

So far with the new year the world has not ended, and nobody fell off the face of the earth so the year is going really good at the moment.

Daniel and I struck out down at the '80 for deer,  having the area flooded did not help matters.  We did see a nice flock of Turkeys which we may try hunting those in the spring.

We had a nice visit with all the nieces and nephews while down there.  Everybody has grown-up since I last saw them.

Is it just my brain or does this happen to everybody?

That is, when the last time you see someone, that is the picture you have of them left in your brain memory. So time passes and the next time you see them they look different and your brain is reset to the new picture of them.   So what happens if you do not see them for a few years, and your brain is locked into a picture of them way back when they were little.  Like still riding a tricycle, or just still being in middle school?  Now all of a sudden they are going to college, driving and helping me fertilize my farm on Farmville!  There are a lot of pictures to reset inside my brain. Photographs do not really work in reseting the brain photo in you brain memory.  Does anyone else have that problem?

I guess it is part of the process of being old. I guess turning things around and looking through the eyes of my younger nieces and nephews they probably have a last picture of me of some old looking uncle.  And then when they see me again years later the picture is probably the same old picture, but just a newer older version of the old picture, which for them is no big deal since all old people look alike.

This brings me to the other topic.  It is amazing on how people will come up to me and say, "you look just like your dad"  .....Great!.....I always wanted to look like I am almost 74 years old at my age!  Who am I going to look like when I make it to 74?  My Great Great Grandfather?  I know it is supposed to be a compliment, but think about it!

Our mailman Steve, who is a friend of ours told us this story.  Steve waved at Daniel before Christmas as Daniel was driving to school.  Steve said Daniel waved just like his dad while driving.  Now Daniel is trying to picture himself with a bald head in the not so near future.

I am guilty of saying the same phrase.  At thanksgiving time I told Megan that she looked just like her mom.  Boy, with what I know now, if I was Megan once I heard that statement I would have grabbed the keys to the car and started driving around town.  If I look like mom, I might as well drive like mom.

Stephen says my time is up on the computer, I wonder where he got that from?  I will be checking for his bald spot.
